Dear friends, I am not writing a new commandment, for it is an old one you have always had, right from the beginning. This commandment — to love one another — is the same message you heard before. Yet it is also new. This commandment is true in Christ and is true among you, because the darkness is disappearing and the true light is already shining.
1 John 2:7-8

A friend a mine and I where having a conversation about forgiving those who have wronged us in the past. She said, “You know Jonathan, it is okay to not forgive because you were hurt and it is okay to hold to that… and….” I immediately interrupted her politely and said, “Susan, you are wrong to say it is okay not to forgive. Here, let me grab my Bible and show you something. Here it is, come and see. As it says in the Mark 11:25, “But when you are praying, first forgive anyone you are holding a grudge against, so that your Father in heaven will forgive your sins, too.“” She read it with me and sat there, perplexed and puzzled, because she was telling everyone that it is okay.

I gently laughed a little then explained to her this. “Susan,” I said, “when we do not forgive others of wrongs that were done to us, how can we possibly be forgiven? Remeber, a forgiven Christian is a forgiving Christian because when Jesus died for us all for the purpose of forgiveness and that Susan is exactly what we all must do. Also, He did not just die for me or you… He died for everyone. From the little child on the street to Hitler or Stalin, those who have hurt me or even you. Jesus gave everyone man, woman, and child the same opportunity to follow Him. To be saved, baptized and repent for our sinful lives and follow Him. It’s up to each individual, to decide what he or she does with what was given and what they do to be forgiven. When we do not forgive, how can we then be forgiven? It is like going up to Jesus and saying, Jesus you did die for me, you were beaten for me, tortured for me, murdered for me … yet …. What You did was not enough. It wasn’t enough for me to not forgive. I was hurt and I… I… I… We can be so selflish because it is always about us.” Susan was silent…….

This is why John was warning us about forgiveness and to fully evaluate our lives when he wrote in 1 John 2:9-13, “If anyone says, “I am living in the light,” but hates a Christian brother or sister, that person is still living in darkness. Anyone who loves other Christians is living in the light and does not cause anyone to stumble. Anyone who hates a Christian brother or sister is living and walking in darkness. Such a person is lost, having been blinded by the darkness. I am writing to you, my dear children, because your sins have been forgiven because of Jesus. I am writing to you who are mature because you know Christ, the one who is from the beginning. I am writing to you who are young because you have won your battle with Satan.

He goes on to say in 1 John 2:15-17, “Stop loving this evil world and all that it offers you, for when you love the world, you show that you do not have the love of the Father in you. For the world offers only the lust for physical pleasure, the lust for everything we see, and pride in our possessions. These are not from the Father. They are from this evil world. And this world is fading away, along with everything it craves. But if you do the will of God, you will live forever.

Listen to the words John uses, “This world is fading away, along with everything it craves.” The sign on the times today’s is apparent that things are slowly coming to an end or a beginning, to what… only God the Father knows. If we hold on to that which is lost, we too will be lost. But, “if you do the will of God, you will live forever! (See John 1 2:15)” This is why we all must learn to love each other, forgive each other freely as we should be forgiven… because again, a forgiven Christian is a forgiving Christian. Remember that.
